Valentines can be so much more than red roses.  It can be as simple as taking the time to tell your friends that they mean the world to you.  Perhaps it’s cooking your kids a special breakfast and hugging on them a little longer.  Or, it can be a day that you pull out all the stops and really get romantic.  But for me, it’s a day where I embrace my family and remember to let it be known that without my husband and children, I would be so empty.  They each give me such joy every single day. I’ve always bucked the romantic side of Valentine’s Day as I don’t like the idea of forced affection, but the day does seem to have grown on me each year.  A lot of red & pink and love & giggles is fun during the gloomy late winter months.  Here are some things that have caught my eye as Valentine’s Day approaches:

I always associate leopard print in the same light as Valentine’s Day: too much kinda gags me while just right is classy and perfect.  This cashmere/silk scarf at The Perfect Pair is the just right kind:

I like to make homemade Valentines with my kids each year.  I’m thinking about heading to Michael’s to buy the supplies needed for my girls to make these cool felt bracelets for their friends.  The boys will just get a card, and I’ll have to come up with a different craft for my 6-year-old son, or just buy the Star Wars ones….

Here is the way the Graves’ start Valentine’s Day: love in the form of eggs.

With a house full of “girlies,” Valentine’s Day is always about pink, a little more pink and all-out shoutin’ pink.  They love to make special cards embellished with candy hearts and usually, they make an extra-special one for my husband and me.  I agree with Liza when she says Valentine’s Day is a time of gratitude and remembrance– a good time to smell the roses, if you were lucky enough to get some!  Valentine’s Day(in my wildest dreams) makes me want to curl up in front of a roaring fire, with a good glass of port and read Sonnets from the Portuguese-14 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning or watch Wuthering Heights as Heathcliffe claws his way to his lover, Catherine. If we do anything of importance in 2011, it should be connecting with our family and friends more. It will make you happier in the long run and probably add a couple of years to your life.  But truth be told–it is fun to see what’s out there in the world of Valentine treats.  Here are some of my favorites.

You can’t go wrong with these fruit tartlettes from Whole Foods in the Hill Center.  A real bargain at 99 cents each, they are perfect to satisfy your sweet tooth on Valentine’s Day.

If you Google Peppercotton Jewelry, you’ll find Patrick Culpepper and Aurelia Cotton are the rock stars of jewelers, with their designs in  nylon mesh tubing filled with loose Swarovski and vintage Czech crystals.  These two have hit the big time with press coverage in several national publications including Seventeen and New York Magazines.  But I love their work because of Patrick’s Nashville connection – namely his Aunt Tanza – who is a good friend of mine. Stay tuned for information on Peppercotton’s trunk show planned in Nashville on March 3-4th.  I have seen their work up close and personal and it’s divine.

Love this cuff

This jewelry stands out as it’s different from the masses; yet at the same time, the heavy reliance on gold and silver metals (instead of bright colors) leaves me in my comfort zone as I’m not a big color gal.  I wish I were, but I’m not.

It’s hard to pare down to just a few, but here are my favorites and then Elizabeth rounds out the post with her faves as well.  You know we have about 100 more that we love…

OK – I tried to pick five pairs of boots that would really integrate into my wardrobe with ease.  I did not pick any classic pairs, as I’m a little bored with those this season.  In fact, most of my boots listed here are all casual in nature – as my job is running around town, not being in an office.  If I were in an office, I’d wear more traditional boots or even the suede booty/pumps that are being merged with such grace this season.  Also, I am 5′ 11″ tall, so I did not pick any 4″ heels which eliminates a lot of my favorites, including pretty much the entire Tory Burch collection.  Here is what I have my tall-self eyes on:

I know this is not a look for everyone, but I really am digging this trend. I think these are the perfect amount of tough, without feeling the need to ride a hog. Frye, $288

Most Steve Madden boots are on trend with a great price point. With a 2 1/2 inch heel, these have caught my eye. $170.

At 3 1/2 inches, these boots are at my personal max for heel height - and truth be told, It's hard for me to shell out this kinda money. But, I also know that sometimes when you splurge, you wear the boots a ton more than ones half the price. And, these are pretty great. They combine the workman boot trend along with the lace up trend. See by Chloe, $411 on Zappos.

I really wanted to include a booty and this was the hardest one to find. I wanted one with a 3 or 3 1/2 inch heel, an open toe, and an ankle opening that opened downward onto the foot, not straight across the ankle. A zipper would be cool as well. Hello Burberry. With a 3 1/2 inch heel, it fits the bill on all counts. It's Burberry priced, at $595.

I could own 20 pairs of cowboy boots…really I could.  And I’d wear them ALL.  So, my “fifth pair” is really several pairs under one category.

J McLaughlin has some of the most flattering dresses. This one, with coral and starfish, is one of the many examples you will find. This print is also available in a halter style dress which just screams complete fun. I, in all seriousness, would buy 3 or 4 dresses from this store in the Hill Center if I weren't on such a dang tight budget! The material is perfect for hot summer days.

Karee Hays

I must admit one of my biggest fears: smelling bad. With the water shortage that Nashville has just witnessed, that fear became a little stronger.  I washed my hair last Tuesday morning in Virginia and held off to wash again until Friday morning here in Nashville….and that was SO HARD.  But, considering what I could have been dealing with, I figured the water was needed for others much more deserving than myself.  So, in the midst of this I got an email from Karee Hays, an aesthetician at Retief Skin Center. Karee samples tons of products and then sends out her favorites; the list includes drugstore and high-end brands.  My immediate interest were the products that smelled good, as that was on the mind.  I’ve NEVER been a perfume wearer, but I think I may try some of the following soaps, lotions, essential oils, and yes, even a perfume, as suddenly the thought of adding some nice smelling product to my not feelin’ so clean self sounds pretty nice.

Here is the portion of Karee’s list devoted to nice smelling products:

• Bath and Body Works $9 Pink Grapefruit Body Lotion. Just get ready to buy stock in the company. I started using this during facials for the arm massage and got so many requests that I contacted the company and they now send it to me to make samples for my clients. It is Spring in a bottle!
• Molton Brown’s, White Mulberry Hand Soap, $22. My husband John, who never notices any type of smell, always makes a comment about this hand soap.  So for Spring I keep White Mulberry on his vanity and the Rose Granati on mine. It takes me back to a vacation in England and staying at this charming Bed and Breakfast in the country. The Cosmetic Market has it in their stores. There are many scents to choose from in this line.
• Amber Oil.  I have a high profile client that came in for her monthly facial, she walked in my room and I was blown away by her scent.  It was not a perfume-y smell; it was so soft and subtle. I asked her what in the world it was. I was expecting some high dollar fragrance name from L.A. She smiled and said, “Karee it is my secret scent.” Of course I begged her to tell me with a little extra facial bribe.  Lo and behold it is $9 Amber Oil from Whole Body. All I can say is it has a gold top with a green and red label and I buy five at a time.  I also like $8 Persian Garden oil. You may have to sample a few to see which ones are for you.  I mix oils all the time.  Water Goddess mixed with Vanilla Musk is heavenly.  Another similar story also led me to The Perfect Pair store in Green Hills for my #2 scent, $149 Molecule.  Just be ready for people to follow you around like crazy trying to figure out what that marvelous smell is…YOU! It is very SEXY!

I am in no way a celebrity stalker, so I really had to look the other way – you know all nonchalant in an I could give a crap who you are kinda way.  Then, I just decided: Screw It.  I’m taking her picture on my iphone.  This is what I got:

I was going to leave it at that. Really I was.  But then, my inner star-stalker temporarily possessed me and before you know it, I was talking – to her – Gwyneth Paltrow.  Now, the ice breaker, of course, was my middle daughter’s gorgeous curls.  It’s hard to be near her and not comment.  So I took the opportunity and ran with it.  I mean, really, I knew we had so much in common.  We are both bloggers. We are both tall blonds (with standing appt’s with our hair dresser to keep it this way!). We both are moms of young children. We both are from the East Coast.  We both like a detox. She lives in England and I’ve been to England. We are both married to rock stars (OK- so mine is a rock star in the data-marketing world.  Really- he is and I’m sure Coldplay works with data marketers so give this one to me, OK?).  Plus, I was in high school theater productions and even had an agent at one point, so we are practically twins separated at birth.  See, it was destiny.

Before you know it, she had agreed to let me show her some of my favorite places in Nashville. She got in my car (she’s trusting, that Gwyneth) and I dropped my kids by the house.  She even commented on my dining room Chandelier, “Didn’t you blog about that?”  That’s when I fought the urge to bear hug her.  I, ever so coolly said, “You read StyleBlueprint?”  She responds, “Oh, yeah.  That’s why I agreed to get in the car with you.  I read it every day.”  Well, call me a monkey’s uncle.  Gwyneth Paltrow reads SBP every day.  It was a pinch me moment.  Right at that time I passed some seriously bad smelling gas.  I rushed her out of the house so she would not clue in.  My hope is that she still thinks it was the dog….

We first stopped by Import Flowers as I had called Elizabeth, blog partner, and I knew she was there. She told me the StyleBlueprint partnership was OVER unless I brought GP by.  Yes, I would have said the same thing.  I love Import Flowers so the ruse was on.

Next, I drove her to The Perfect Pair as I could tell from the shoes she was wearing that this was the store for her. It was.  In fact the shoes she had on were sold last year at The Perfect Pair.  She bought three pairs of shoes, a pair of Mingle earrings and 2 Virgin, Saints and Angels necklaces.  I should have kept that agent and done the acting thing.  I want to walk into The Perfect Pair and buy all that.

I had Whitney, co-owner of Perfect Pair, take this picture of the awesome starfish bracelet on sale there (really- I love that bracelet). But, of course that was to keep Gwyneth Paltrow from knowing I was sneaking a pic for all of you to see! Ha ha!

Next, I swung her by Petit Chateau since I love this store and they are going out of business. My thought was that maybe she could just buy up the whole store and let these two great gals that own it get on with their design firm and leave the retail behind.  Buy she did, but she left plenty for you to still buy as well.  Get yourself over there as everything is as of April 1 (today) 40% off and we are talking brands like Oly Studio, French Laundry and one-of-a-kind antiques.

Gwyneth said what she wanted most at this point was the perfect pair of jeans, another scarf, and perhaps some vintage cowboy boots. I knew the perfect destination: Imogene + Willie. I did a U-y in the street which caused a minor accident.  Gwyneth was kind enough to explain to everyone that we were in a hurry and handed out my cell phone number and took pictures with each person involved which cast some sort of magical spell over all of them and we were able to speed away.

We arrived at Imogene + Willie and she scored big.  I think the owners there, Matt and Carrie Eddmenson, immediately replaced me as her new Nashville BFF.  I mean they are just too cool and I couldn’t keep up.  She hung out there and finally told me that she would catch me later.  I knew the dream was over and I was gracious and told her goodbye.  Perhaps she suspected I was taking all these pictures?

I was kinda mad at those cool cat owners of Imogene + Willie. Why did they have to be so engaging and simply ooze style and cool in a way that I could never compete?  Man- they even made it onto her top places to shop list featured on Gwyneth’s blog GOOP.

Alas, we’ll always have those few hours. During that time, it was just me, Nashville, and GP.  And, I do have a momento (besides stolen moments captured on my phone).  My dented car door from my U-y experience:

It's such a great story it's a shame to have the door fixed. If you try real hard you can even make the dent look like a G. Gwyneth did comment that mine was the first minivan she had been in. I bet she loved it so much that she buys one for her crew. I wonder if they make Honda Odysseys with the steering wheel on the right-hand side?

My scarf drawer. Yes, all my drawers are this organized!

There’s no better, more multi-purpose, more necessary accessory than a scarf. That probably explains its staying power.

• Queen Nefertiti sported a scarf with one of her headdresses.
• Eleanor of Aquitaine started a Middle Ages fashion craze by tying a piece of gossamer to the tip of her pointed hat.
• Napoleon sent cashmere scarves from India to his wife in the 18th century. And these days, every designer who’s ever filled a catwalk has a line of scarves.
• I rarely leave home without one.
• There’s a scarf for every season, every budget, every occasion, every age, and every personal style.

How to tie your scarf:
It’s the lament I hear most often: I just don’t know how to tie a scarf!  To which my response is: It’s not macramé. Remember, millions of men manage a four-in-hand knot every weekday morning.  Tying a scarf isn’t half as hard.
French women rule in this arena. But I think it’s habit, rather than their knot-tying expertise, that makes it look so je ne sais quoi.  What they don’t do – and you shouldn’t either – is fuss too much over your scarf.  A lovely scarf will look lovely, no matter how you wear it.  There’s plenty of online help for scarf-tying fears. And this is when a picture really is worth a thousand words.

What’s New & Local

As the weather warms, fabric and color combos especially matter.  A scarf’s utilitarian function of keeping you warm doesn’t really apply anymore (except in over-air-conditioned spots).  Sheer cottons and silk, loose weaves, and lightweight are essential to spring and summer scarves.  I’ve got some of those famous French scarves I just won’t wear after April or May.  That heavy silk twill isn’t meant for a Nashville summer.  But there are so many other options!
I love the nautical-style stripes that are everywhere this season.  Trims like fringe, braid, and even pom-poms look fun and fresh on sunny spring days.  And tie-dye’s making a comeback.  There’s hardly a store in town that doesn’t have a scarf selection, but here are a few I particularly like.

Tie Dye

I was inclined to leave the tie-dye trend to my 20-something daughter until I saw these.  Incredibly lightweight and gauzy, so the size isn’t overwhelming.  You could wrap these around your waist or over a bathing suit too.  Silk, $65 – $88 at the Perfect Pair, 2209 Bandywood Drive, Nashville.

Natural indigo, in all its bygone glory:

Probably the oldest dye known, indigo was once called Blue Gold.  Virtually all of today’s indigo dye, however, is synthetic. Not in these patterned scarves though.  Woven and dipped in natural indigo in India (by Bart Sights, brother of I+W’s co-owner, Carrie).  Subtle and spectacular.   Available at Imogene + Willie.
