Ahhh, spring. The return of this gorgeous weather also means a return to grassy sidelines for spring sports. From soccer to softball, to baseball, lacrosse and track, today we address sideline fashion. Not for the kids, mind you. For the moms watching.

Soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, track... it's a busy season to be a mom

A few rules, for all:

• Heavy makeup on the sidelines is not what you want while you’re standing in grass, hollering for your sweaty kids. “A little dab’ll do ya.”

• The sideline is not a runway. Yes, you will see people you know in droves. But, sideline fashion is low-key. Put another way, the cuteness of the kids needs to outshine yours.

I guess if you are Victoria Beckham you can wear whatever you want.

• Velour sweatsuits should be burned. If I see anyone with JUICY across their bottom, I might scream. First off, this trend peaked TEN years ago. Secondly, no a** should ever have the word “juicy” written across it. It’s vulgar.

• If you wear a dress, it should be extremely casual. Your dress should basically talk for itself and say “Athleta purchase.” A dress that’s too cute, makes other moms instantly uncomfortable. I’m not trying to pontificate on whether that is right or wrong. I’m just stating a fact.

Yes, this dress is sideline fashionable. But, if you wear the dress, wear the cardigan, unless it's blazing hot. Your hair can't be too perfect and flip flops are a must. Otherwise, you will be dangerously close to breaking the too-cute-for-this-sideline rule. (Picture from Athleta)

Basically, you need to look casual. “But, some women simply don’t own casual” you say? If this sounds like you, then it’s time for you to go shopping. Here are some things to think about:

A pair of faded jeans. These are from J. Crew.

Pair your faded jeans with a cozy, stripped, long sleeve tee, worn over a tank. On the field, weather that starts off cold often ends up blazing hot. Layers are key.

A comfortable (read: laid-back, non-starched) red chambray shirt would be super cute with these first two offerings, under the striped tee.  It’s OK to be the prepster when you’re on the sideline. No one is doing chambray better this year than Land’s End. Who knew?

For those of us who insist on wearing our workout clothes to the sidelines: first, may I call you sister? Second, there’s is a good chance you will be going from one game to the next. Give yourself a good look in the mirror, even if it’s 7:00 am, and ask yourself, “If I end up at lunch looking like this, will I be OK running into my nemesis?”  I doubt any of you have a nemesis, but you understand where I’m going with this.

These workout wear options, even if only worn to create the illusion that you have –or will– work out will get you to the gym, the sideline, court side and to lunch looking good.

Pair these pants with a jacket and a thin tee. Again, layering is the best advice I can give here.

Pair with either of these with a tee, or this striped linen sweater, and a cross-the-body bag and you are sideline hip.

So, you got it? No more teased up Bumpit hair. No more heavy foundation and Gwen Stefani red lips. No more clothes that were never made for hugging sweaty kids. And, if you’ve been showing up to cheer on the home team in something just north of your pj’s, invest in some of the key pieces you’ve seen here.

• Sunglasses
• Hats
• A large bag
• Extra water bottles
• A foldable chair

There you go. We knew you were a cute mom. Now, the whole world knows that, too!
