Our post today is from StyleBlueprint Birmingham Editor Catherine Romero:

Today we feature the beautiful home of Birmingham homeowners Sullins and Brad Phelan, built in 2008 and designed by local architect, Brian Jernigan. Soft hues of grey, greige and beige are used throughout, giving the home a cozy, calming feel. Decorating with neutral colors is far from dull, as these rooms attest. Using splashes of rich neutrals such as black, dark grey and chocolate brown to give the rooms depth, as well as adding in textures and patterns through fabrics, wood detailing, wall covering, window treatments, tile and accessories creates dimension and visual interest. Curated, but not overly controlled, this home is both welcoming and inspiring.

Here in the dining room, I love all the little architectural details like the interior circular window that looks into the kitchen, the painted wood ceiling and the floor to ceiling closet doors. The stone flooring throughout the front of the house is made of Peacock Pavers in buff. This house has so much enviable storage–the dining room has two china closets, one on either side of the interior window!

Sullins recently had the dining room chairs recovered and had a dog bed made to match.

The living room strikes a balance between comfort and sophistication that is incredibly inviting. Drapery panels and rich, velvety upholstery lend a cozy feel, while details such as the vaulted ceiling with wood beams, upholstered panels behind the bookshelves and wallpaper (yes, that’s wallpaper!) above the fireplace add an element that is urbane and refined.

The details in the living room give an air of comfortably relaxed sophistication.

The kitchen has a bit of a minimalist feel with no upper cabinetry. Instead, the window we saw in the dining room becomes the focal point amid a wall of tile. The countertops and tile backsplash are Azul limestone, a beautiful, soft grayish green color. The copper lanterns, breakfast nook and wood ceilings balance the cool stone, bringing warmth to the area.

The barstools at the kitchen island swivel for easy access in and out.

The kitchen adjoins the family room, where the soaring ceilings are covered in reclaimed barn wood and linen slipcovers adorn the furniture. Much of the furniture throughout the home is custom-made and many pillows are from Sullins’ company, Too, Unique Pillow Accents

Upstairs boasts a huge playroom with six built-in beds!

Upstairs the guest room can accommodate an entire team or another family with six built-in beds.

The boys rooms are both on the main level, as is the master bedroom. Here we see lots of unique finds collected over time. Sullins said some of her favorite places to find home decor items are Scott’s Antiques in Atlanta, Hiltz Lauber, MCJ Co Interiors and Restoration Hardware.

This incredible breakfront came from Scott’s Antiques.

The walls of the boys’ rooms are covered with a textured grasscloth wallpaper and the decor is decidedly masculine with dark furniture accents and nods to hobbies such as fishing, guitar and sports.

The master is light and airy with soft fabrics and colors. Mounted to the upholstered headboard is a large conch shell. Full length windows bring in lots of light, and a door opens onto a private back patio.
