My husband and I recently bought a house. And, along with a new house come so many decisions and choices. We’ve got loads of improvement ideas for the whole house, but we’re focusing our energy on the kitchen first. It is on the small side with lots of white: white cabinets, white back splash, a white paneled refrigerator and white doors.

Excuse my horrid iPhone picture, but I wanted to give y’all an idea of what I am working with.

My immediate reaction to all the white decor? Black walls to break up the space and add detail and richness that can sometimes be lacking in an all-white interior. I must be drawn to this idea, as my boards on Pinterest are covered with photographs of rooms featuring black walls, windows, and doors. Here are a few images that have inspired me to do something similar in my own home:

Love the combination of black paint, stainless steel and a white ceiling.

Who knew that picking the perfect black paint could be so hard? So, after many trials and errors, here are my narrowed down choices. Yes, I can confidently say that my favorite black paint colors are:

  1. Just talking about painting interior doors black yesterday! too funny. I also love Dragon’s Breath by BM – it’s a soft black. I often recommend it to clients for stair rails and newell posts. It’s a great color. M.

  2. Do it! I painted my dining room black over 2 years ago and I still love it.

  3. Black and white is so graphic. Always a classic choice. Love all these examples!

one of my neighbors has a similar kitchen, not a l lot of wall exposed and she did paint her kitchen black- it looks terrific, i painted my front door black yesterday and I love it- go for it

My entire house is white.. white walls, white trim, you name it. And yes, on purpose. :) BUT the inside of my exterior doors are Benjamin Moore’s Black Jack. I used the exterior Low Lustre BM formula and my view outside looks so much better framed by the soft black. Go for it, You’ll love it!!

  6. I love black trim on doors and windows — like the french doors in your photo above.

Did you change your counter tops? They were black initially (like mine), then white with the black cabinets….threw me for a loop.

I love black as well, when I wanted to update my kitchen but not get rid of oak cabinets, I painted them all black and then put granite on countertops and pewter tiles on backsplash. Also painted a very average white fireplace , black and then aged it, still love it.
