I was immediately smitten upon seeing Fire Pit Art, by Rick Wittrig. StyleBlueprint has long advocated handmade usable art, and the pieces featured here today definitely qualify.

Rick Wittrig lives outside of Nashville and started creating these steel fire pits several years ago. I asked him how he came to choose this career and had to laugh at his answer:

A few years ago we purchased a fire pit for our family. It promptly fell apart and caught the yard on fire. I told my wife Donna “This will not happen again; I will build a better fire pit,” and so I did. When our friends came over they would say, “ Wow, where did you get that?”  So I made some for friends and soon started marketing locally. Today we sell in all fifty states including Alaska and Hawaii, across most of Canada (we had one commissioned by the Olympics!), the Bahamas and as far away as Australia.

You’ve got to love and admire this can-do attitude.  Rick grew up in a tiny Mennonite farming village in Illinois where he learned many skills, including welding and metal fabrication for farm machinery.  These skills, obviously, have come in handy.

As Rick mentioned, his Third Rock-designed fire pit was commissioned by the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, Canada.

I’m all inspired to re-do my backyard. Aren’t you? With a fire pit this pretty, we may just need to roast marshmallows year round!

  1. I love Rick’s pieces, they are really interesting and well done.
We have the” Wings of Flight” log holder at DIGS on Bandywood. Stop by and see how great they are!

Neil and I love Rick’s work and bought one of his first fire pits for our lake house. Not only is it stunning against the back drop of the woods it is practical. I experimented with cooking in the pit —-not just hot dogs. We had steamed clams in foil, baked potatoes, root vegetables; we added a chuck wagon grill that could swing over for meats or pots of chili and stew. We have sold the lake house and hope the new owners are enjoying it as much as we did!

Last year I was driving on 65 and passed a pick up truck with one of his fire pits on the back trailer. I almost slammed into the car in front of me I was so taken with the design! I have been stalking his website ever since, planning which one to buy for our new house!

Love seeing this about Rick! Funny and true story: about three years ago I was behind Rick on Franklin Road about three days before Christmas while he was pulling his trailer full of fire pits. I called the number on his truck, and we both pulled off on the side of the road. Everything he was hauling had already been sold, but he delivered a fire pit to my house the next day as a wonderful surprise for my husband’s December 23 birthday.
