Fall may be our favorite time to set a table: limelight hydrangeas, bittersweet, dried cotton … Elizabeth and I asked our friend, interior designer Roger Higgins, to put together his ideal table for a fall dinner party as he is known for not only creating gorgeous rooms, but gorgeous tablescapes as well. We asked him for tips, and he went one step further and actually created a tablescape just for us to share today. So, pick up some dinner from your favorite restaurant (no one will know) and offer a signature cocktail, but embrace fall and have your friends over. Here’s how to make sure your table sets the perfect tone. Thank you, Roger!

StyleBlueprint Roger Higgins Fall Dinner Party

Roger:

Fall is the time that people start really thinking about their home; it’s when they begin nesting and spending more time inside reflecting on what “home” means to them. Pieces that hold a lot character and history are important in my home, and that’s why I selected mostly vintage items for today’s tablescape.

Fall is also the best time of the year to borrow from your yard. The things that have been growing all summer long are at their peak right before dying, so clip all the hydrangea or crab apples you can and bring them inside to enhance your dining table.

The plates are ironstone with transferware pattern while the linens are made from French course flower sacks. These things each tell stories (and are an obvious conversation starter) which is a key ingredient for what I want my home to consist of.

Limelight Hydrangeas are a favorite of mine. They dry looking just as pretty as they look fresh. Bittersweet is the perfect accent in the fall.

Here, I used a contemporary wooden charger from West Elm to add an organic and natural layer to the atmosphere. The placemats are Hadley Placemats which are cork-backed and easy to wipe clean.

Dinner parties should always reflect you and the way you live, so use things you already own. In this case, I chose some old everyday glassware mixed with cobalt blue wine glasses for an interesting balance. The flatware is also not all from the same set–the forks are from a vacation I took to Ireland, the knives from the Nashville flea market, and I’ve picked up the spoons from all over. Gathering pieces that bring you comfort from around your house and mixing them with some of your other beloved items is a great equation for creating a beautiful and unique arrangement.

Use every opportunity you can to add to your collection of serving essentials. I’ve been accumulating for years and years, and for each dinner party, I’m able to create a one-of-a-kind table by mixing pieces in new ways which makes hosting parties still exciting and ensures that the environment never gets stale.

When it’s all done, the guests should get a glimpse of your life and you should be able to look around and be reminded of the little details of your everyday that bring you joy.

Thank you, Roger. We’re inspired and we hope you are too!
