My husband and I taught a class on blogging this past Monday night at Harpeth Hall. Near the end of the class, I mentioned that I like reading blogs that throw in the bizarre sometimes. Then, I recited a recipe I had recently read, giggling that if I were a food blogger, surely this would pop up as a recipe at some point.
Well, you know, StyleBlueprint DOES focus on food every Thursday. So, I’m ditching my post on kale salad in favor of this recipe, printed in a 1993 Junior League cookbook, the city from which is being left unnamed. Thank you to Beth Adams for showing this to me as we both laughed until we cried.
I have always maintained that Junior League cookbooks are my absolute favorites. However, this is one recipe that I hope to never try.
Opossum and Sweet Potatoes (in the Celebrities section, no less!)
Â
For all of our readers on iPhones who can’t read that picture, here are the highlights:
- 1 medium opossum
- 4 medium sweet potatoes cut into halves
- salt to taste
So, where does one find a medium opossum? Well, you just need to read the instructions:
- Catch the opossum and clean it out by feeding it molasses, prepared baby food, and honey for a week to 10 days.
- Kill the opossum and clean it out, like a chicken.
- Blah blah blah basic cooking instructions….
- Serve with cornbread, beans and corn.
Yields THREE servings (have you seen a three serving recipe…ever?).
This made me wonder if there are other opossum recipes out there. Sure ‘nough there are…
Thank goodness this 5 star opossum recipe does not have a photo! From Food.com
So, is it just me? I had no idea that recipes for opossum were anything more than “when super hungry, you shoot one and then cook it.”

I must ask, and you can use a fake name in the comment section, have any of you ever tried opossum?
