When Labor Day rolls around, does this really mean that all white jeans, white shoes, white jackets, and white accessories need to disappear until next spring? We’re here to say — absolutely not. Here are 10 legitimate reasons that you should just say YES to white after Labor Day!

Reason #1

If the last two and half years have taught us anything, it’s that rules about wearing white after Labor Day are plain stupid. You’ve lived through a pandemic, a global shutdown, political strife, crazy inflation, and lots of angry people. Surely with that, you can decide to wear some white jeans in September?

Reason #2

Reason #1 is enough to cover two reasons. Amen.

Reason #3

Love her or not (she seems to elicit strong opinions for all sides!), Meghan Markle said yes to Harry’s proposal in late November 2017 – a yes was heard around the world! And, what did she wear on their first official appearance? A white coat. In late November. Yep. With all the proper dos and don’ts, she wore a white coat. You can, too.

Cut outs of Meghan and Harry
Meghan wore a white coat on November 27, 2017, when she and Prince Harry announced their engagement. Cut outs of Harry and Meghan were spotted everywhere in the UK, so you know a lot of thought went into that outfit! White after Labor Day is just fine.

Reason #4

Since about 2017, runways and city streets have been filled with white shoes. I’m not sure what happened that year, but white shoes for fall and winter were in and they haven’t gone away. They may not be as big this year, but that trend certainly helped break some remaining barriers.

And, again, who cares? It’s a color that everyone loves to wear. Wear it whenever you want to!

Reason #5

Speaking of fashion brands, Coco Chanel wore white year-round. Even if you are a huge rule follower for even archaic rules, if Coco Chanel could wear white year round, you can, too.

Reason #6

Men, Tom Wolfe also wore white year-round, although admittedly this is an extreme example.

Reason #7

Just because some snobby people decided in the late 1800s that white after Labor Day was a no-no (one of the many reasons given for the seasonal whites rule), does this mean that we still need to follow this rule? If you no longer think that it’s your job to have the kids changed into clean, pressed clothes when your husband comes home or to have a cocktail ready for him as he walks in the door, then perhaps it’s time to rethink that idea that you can’t wear white after Labor Day! Again, extreme examples, but ladies, if you want to wear white … wear white!

You’ve lived through a PANDEMIC! Wear white!

Reason #8

White jeans look really good with leopard prints, and leopard prints will forever be a classic item in a woman’s closet. Why would you stop wearing this combo after Labor Day?

Reason #9

Back to white jeans.  September in the South is really hot, and why should white jeans be allowed on Friday, September 2, but not allowed on Tuesday, September 6? We’re smarter than this, people!

White jeans are fun to take out in the spring and wear to everything for a few months straight. But, they sure do look good layered in the cooler months with everything from bright reds to warm browns. And, a classic black sweater, scarf, white jeans, and brown boots sure do look fabulous, always.

Reason #10

Girl, you be you. If part of that means you love white, then wear it every day you want to wear it. It’s a color, not a rule. It’s 2023 — wear whatever length skirt you want, whatever statement or delicate jewelry you want and in the fall, wear your dark blue jeans, your black jeans, or your white jeans. Whatever you decide, we’ll be cheering you on.
